Your home recording studio setup doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated, especially if you are a beginner. As a member of a popular Nashville songwriter’s group, I get asked by a lot of aspiring songwriters… “Should I have a home studio, and what equipment do I need?” There are several great options that I recommend to people on a regular basis.
To answer the first question, YES. You should definitely have some sort of home studio if you are going to write songs. In the 80′s, we used to record our ideas on a hand-held cassette recorder. Then we would layer them with guitar on a Tascam Multi-Track recorder. It was a tedious affair, and the results were less than stellar. Now things have changed so much! If we’d had access to digital recording equipment, and especially software like Mixcraft 5, and Youtube back then — we might have been famous.
Anyway, systems are so high-tech yet simple, music lovers who want to compose really have no excuse not to be able to produce passable demos. I am notorious downtown for turning people on to the $200 Basic Songwriter’s Studio, and the $300 Deluxe Songwriter’s Studio. These setups do not come bundled. It’s just a set of recommended products that I suggest to people daily. I have not found a cheaper or better system for getting you started in professional-sounding recording. Must have a computer – check Mixcraft system requirements.
